You guys hauling all the extra baggage on board and using the overhead delay everything and bug the crap outta me.
My backpack fits under the seat in front of me if necessary.
That's all I had for 3 months in Spain, it's all I have for any trip.
Travel can be *interesting* enough without bringing along extra stuff, and then having to worry about it.
I have to check in bags. When I travel I usually buy stuff. And when I went to NY a few months ago I bought quite a lot of things. Yeah, I know ~ I could always box and ship them, but I'm too stingy on time when I vacation.
I do have a little trick with the carry-on, though. I throw in one of those thin, cheap $5 back-packs meant to carry a sweater. The straps are hardly more than shoe-strings. But it folds flat. When I pass security I sit down at my departing gate area and transfer certain items into the back-pack: neck pillow, medicines (the ones I may need during flight), a thin blanket if I have one, reading material, and my purse (which are never big). It all fits fine, and slips comfortably under the seat in front of me.
I admire those of you who can travel for weeks with one back-pack.
Hey, did any of you see my suitcase that I lost in 1981? No kidding - a direct flight from San Francisco to Atlanta, and I never saw my suitcase again. I was late getting off the plane, it was Christmas time, and all my gifts to friends and family were in the suitcase - someone had a good holiday. The only way anyone would know it's not the proper bag would be for someone else to jump up and down and scream and do handsprings... and even then, it's doubtful you'd get stopped.
Oh, wait, move from one country to another with two (matching) checked bags, a (matching) carry on and laptop case, and three cats in their carriers... and you are OBVIOUSLY trying to steal something... so they'll open all your bags, ask for ID, and open the pet carriers to strip-search your pets. (no, they never actually asked for nor looked at the documentation I had for my pets). I did have the last laugh... it had been a long overseas flight and one of my cats had had a slight "accident." Don't you think this is exactly the type of person the security folks are looking for to slip into the country unnoticed and steal other people's bags?
The airlines figured out that it was cheaper to pay the traveler for the occassional bag that someone else walked out the door with rather than pay an employee to stand there and match claim checks. If your friends were in the same orginal reservation, the airline would have seen this and the bag tags are also in the computer in that reservation.
