My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the accident victims and the crew at Colgan Air (which operated the flight) of the Pinnacle Corporation.

The only major speculation I have heard so far is ice build up. Ice build up would change the pressure differential, as air needs to move faster over the wing than below the wing to keep a plane in the air. If ice builds up, air can move slower over the top and the pressure differential with air below the wing can get low enough that the plane would just fall out of the air. Again, just speculation based off what has been revealed so far. The complete process must be waited upon and something totally different could be the cause.

The NTSB said this:
"The crew discussed significant ice build-up — ice on the windshield and leading edges of the wings," said the NTSB's Steven R. Chealander.

While he stressed no conclusion has been reached as to whether the ice build-up played a role in the crash, Chealander confirmed ice can play havoc with aircraft.

"Nothing has been ruled in, nothing has been ruled out," Chealander said.

Very sad reading the newspaper this morning. Many NJ people on the plane. One was from my town.

I never fly in the winter anymore because we had a scare one year flying to Las Vegas on Valentine's weekend. The reason being, ice build up.

Stop listening to the cable news and reading the blogs. Get the Buffalo News online, for crying out loud! [I live less than 5 miles away from the crash site; my favorite bookstore is a few blocks from the crash site] Anything you saw on TV of reporters speaking was done at the town hall several miles away... it is glitzy and new, not at all like the Center.. Clarence is a big town with lots of developments, the newer ones very pricy for here. Clarence Center is a tiny hamlet of middle class homes in the middle of it; it was founded in the early 1800s and was one of the places you could buy land from the Holland Land Company. If you want to actually see where the area is , get an online map of the intersection of Clarence Center Rd and Goodrich Rd, Clarence Center NY. (msnbc put up a visual putting the crash south of the Thruway; it was NORTH. They used the location of the Clarence EXPOSITION Center for the crash -- duh, no research! ( That is in Clarence Hollow -- actually, closer to Newstead, on Main St. Rte 5) Clarence Center (hamlet) has less than 2,500 people. It is maybe 6 roads by 6 road -- 36 to 40 blocks, if you only count the original hamlet. The big center of town is a coffee shop, a bookstore, a culinary shop (pots, cooking items), a tea house, a huge variety store ( used to be an 1800s general store) which sells high end stuff, a hair salon and a daycare..... plus a bank , a few churches, a P.O., the fire station. All this has been upgraded to snobby since the big developments grew up around "the Center" and people with big money moved in.

Since the crash, most of the area has been blocked off with ghouls trying to sightsee. [Pathetic. Several got arrested.] It is almost cleaned now -- the bookstore just e-mailed me to tell me that they and the culinary store were re-opening soon. [closed due to no access til now]

As to the flight, it was on the ground in Newark a long time. Anything I ever flew out of Newark was always on the ground a long time. The plane probably needed de-icing then, before it took off. The saddest thing about all this is that the plane dropped on the house when 500 feet beyond was a farmers field, on Clarence Center Rd. Maybe it could have saved at least one person. It might have been soft enough to do more.

Your reality check should be reading the week long coverage in the Buffalo News and the obits from here, not from outside sources. Most people on the plane were locals.

I was in BUF the day after the crash. Front page of the newspaper was titled "PLUNGE INTO HORROR". Can you say sensationalism? Made me want to puke.

Completely inconsequential even if it were true. FWIW I don't believe there was any precip falling so no they shouldn't have needed to get deiced.

So do you drive instead? As if that's any safer .

Ice on airplanes isn't a deal breaker, it happens, there is equipment to take care of it.

Yeah but it's all psychological. At least on the road you know what you're getting into. I bet the last thing on those poor passenger's minds was that it was all gonna be over with no warning in a matter of seconds.

You certainly do: twice as many people die daily in car accidents than in the past 2 years combined in air travel.

Well that's a given considering there are millions more automobiles on the road than jets in the sky.
