Where in the U.S. do you think is the best place to live if you really want to get some serious travelling in--national and international? I think some of the criteria would be;
1. Lots of inexpensive flights to lots of destinations
2. Lower cost of living so that one could afford the trips
3. What else???
My gut reaction would have been ATL but they only have Delta and TransAir. Southwest does not go into Atlanta.
Southwest also does not go into Charlotte, but goes into Raleigh. Southwest goes into all of FL's population centers.
Chicago and Houston offer many air choices (as both have 2 major airports). However, if you are like me, and like Europe, "crossing the pond" from the Northeast and the Middle Atlantic (DC) is the easiest and least expensive region to do that from.
We moved from North NJ to San Diego in October. When we lived in NJ, we traveled at least once a month, both domestically and internationally. We had 3 airports to choose from (EWR, JFK, LGA) and got some awesome deals, which is why we traveled so much. Now that we moved to SD, we haven't traveled anywhere. Even flights to San Francisco are ridiculously priced!
I'm not sure if the NYC area is best or cheapest, but we got some awesome deals out of those airports and miss the freedom of leaving somewhere new every month. I can say that if you wish to travel, do not move to San Diego. There are limited flights out of SAN (yes, you can drive to LAX, but it's not THAT close) and the flights they have are very expensive for some reason.
Need to be where an airline has a hub. First thoughts were Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Denver. California and New York are also hubs but cost of living make it tough to save. Houston has Continental and Southwest, Dallas has American and Southwest...both out of two airports. I'm partial to Houston. Low COL for big city...and I travel a good amount.
