After watching the movie "Mamma Mia" together as a girls night out thing, some of the women in my sorority (women's group, not the college kind! we're in our 40's & 50's) thought it would be fun to plan a trip to the Greek Isles. I am looking into it with a tour company that I deal with in taking my students on student tours. If anyone out there is interested in this type of trip let me know! Not just women....some of us want to take our DH's. This trip would probably be during the summer of 2010. Think about it~!
My wife and I travel and live in Greece part of the year. I've never been to a Greek island I wouldn't go back to (with the possible exception of the over-touristed Mykonos).
The southern coast of Crete is heaven ... few tourists, great hiking, wonderful beaches. The little island of Folegandros is a favorite. Naxos is a nice choice for a larger-but-too-large island. Sifinos is another favorite. And the list goes on and on...
Forget about a cruise or group tour: Do it on your own. The ferries are terrific, on-time, inexpensive, and plentiful. Go before the peak season (starts mid-July), and you can wing it and find places to stay as you go - no reservations necessary. Happy travels!
Thank you all for your posts! It sounds like Crete is the top vote getter so far!
Have a great trip, I think you'll love Crete. That said, the north coast is very different (more developed, commericalized, AMerican-style resorts, etc.) than the beautiful, relatively deserted southern coast. We particularly love the little towns along the south west coast; you can ferry (or hike) from one town to the next. Of course you really need to hike the Samarian Gorge ... simply incredible. Many of the towns in the interior (e.g. Zaros) are also marvelous as well.
Also, consider a short side trip to the tiny island of Gavdos, the southern most point in Europe ... remote, few tourists, charming.
Also would put my vote in for Santorini. We had a wonderful time there and the island is beautiful!
