Any places/experiences you've visited/had that you were a little wary about because of the hype but were pleasantly surprised and thought the hype was well-deserved?

I think the view from the Eiffel Tower in Paris and from the Empire State Building in New York City. First I did not know if its worth to wait and pay for, but both views and buildings are amazing.

I'd have to say Las Vegas - there is so much more to do than just gambling. Las Vegas has become a family tourist attraction.

Also Myrtle Beach. I have lived in Virginia all my life and avoided the place like the plague. Thought it was just another fancy beach town. I was VERY surprised when we went for the first time a few years ago. We had a blast! I was surprised that the waves were calm - it was almost like a lake - not the big crashing waves of the more northern beaches. It made splashing in the ocean much more pleasurable. I liked it enough to go back 2 summers later - I never go to the same place twice!

Grand Canyon - words can't describe it and pictures/film simply do no justice.

Quebec City is very nice and unpretentious. If you're in the neighborhood by car, park in Levis and take the ferry to downtown Quebec City.

To me, San Diego seemed to live up to its hype. Yellowstone was the same way; you just have to get past the tourist traps and off the beaten path.

Venice, but not in the summer.

Wandering around the parts that are away from the main tourist traps is wonderful.

Hawaii.
I always expected it to be this synthetic place, and it can be like that if you never leave the resort. But we were pleasantly surprised by the scenery, the people, the everything about it. Volcano National Park was amazing.

Stonehenge.
For a lot of people, it's just a pile of rocks. But for me it was evocative and magical.

The Grand Canyon....I mean sure it's a massive tourist trap, but at the same time it truly lives up to its hype.

Mont St. Michel is a massive tourist trap and yet, the views from the top are awesome. Plus, it is such a stunning looking place. I agree with Dakota Douglas about the views from the top of the Eiffel Tower though it can be a bit of pain getting to the 3rd level. The Pyramids at Giza are impressive. Pictures don't do them justice. It's a little annoying that the Egyptian authorities are nickel and diming you there. 60 Egyptian pounds to get in the complex, 50 Egyptian pounds to see the Solar boat and 100 Egyptian pounds to climb inside Cheops pyramid to see the top chamber (playing Indiana Jones doesn't come cheap there). Lastly, the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is a massive tourist trap and yet, I thought it was really impressive.
