Bait fares are illegal in some countries. So too with hidden fees: a new law just started in Australia outlawing advertising a low international $300 fare that had a hidden $1000 of so-called 'taxes' . Another law outlaws unfair terms in air tickets.

But $9 isn't healthy competetion, imo.

Qantas is stopping first class but the lowcost offshoot of Qantas, Jetstar, is making excellent money with its no frills domestic fares and fares from Melbourne Australia (not Fl) to Tokyo, New Zealand and Hawaii. Branson's Virgin Group (VirginAmerica, who codeshares with Delta, Alskan, Hawaian, Malasian and Vaustralia) is growing well after taking a nice big slice of Qantas/Jetstar's share of the most profitable fee-gouging routes. Low international airfares to the US and UK are now 'affordablel' at a third of the fee-fest prices a year ago , filling planes, and bringing tourist dollars into stagnant economies, imo. So healthy competetion is healthy, but stupid prices will end in tears.
