It's been years since I've been to Europe. Would love to visit there with my new husband who's never been. Thinking 2-4 weeks, trying to do so frugally but staying in smaller pensions (room with private bath) and not youth hostels. Might consider a rail pass instead of driving, not sure. How much do you think airfare plus expenses would cost?

There are 47 countries in Europe, you need to narrow down your trip to specific countries and maybe people will be able to help you.

If you are going for 2-4 weeks maybe consider 2 countries so you can see more and spend less time travelling.

Are you flying out of ABQ? Think about going during shoulder season.
Sign up with Yapta.
Check into ITA.
You might take a look at Eurotrip.com or Tripadvisor.
It can run about $100 a day for even frugal travelers.
Consider CouchSurfing. We used it, and we're oldsters.
I don't think rail passes are as cost effective as they used to be, but others may know better. On our recent trip, we used the train as well as rented a car.

One large influence on the cost of a vacation in Europe is the exchange rate you'll be getting.

Currently the $ is falling against the Euro and the .

I second Richiie's advice, you need to narrow down your country list and specify whether your intent is to do a "blitz" trip to sample many countries or stopover and chillout in just a few destinations. Our limited experience so far is that chilling out for 4-7 days in an area allows you to get a better flavor for the locale as well as avoid blitz fatigue. An alternative we are currently looking at is a river trip through multiple countries where you only unpack once (highly desirable to us.) Hope that helps.

Righto. Too many to see adequately in one trip, so here goes:

First trip: top priority is Italy but would like to sneak into Austria, too, to Saltzburg & Innsbruck. Maybe 3 weeks total for both countries or all in Italy.

Time and money permitting on separate trips: Greece, southern Germany, Switzerland, France, Amsterdam, Norway, Sweden, England, Scotland

Has anyone here had experience with Elderhostel?

The airfare will depend on when you go too. Summer is going to be the most expensive since that's when most tourists go to Europe. Winter would be cheaper however, some things you might want to see might be closed then.

Went to rome a few weeks ago. Airfare from the west coast was 500 a person roundtrip. Splurged a little on lodging, but still came out around 200 a night. Plan on a lot for food though.

Trains are worthwhile - try Ferrovie dello Stato - Homepage for schedules and prices - if you book one traveling at night, you can save on hotel costs by getting a sleeper berth.

money taken out of an ATM with a US card was exchanging at 1eur : 1.3 usd

Airfare, very very variable - $500 to $1,000 per person depending on season, airports, times you can travel, etc.

Expenses (hotels, transportation, food, entertainment & siteseeing) - variable based on comfort and expectations, your statement "room with private bath" tells us alot and removes alot of the extreme budget options, I consider this intermediate one step above budget level expenses - $250 to $350 a day.

3 to 4 week total - $6,500 to $12,000
