Jet Blue, Frontier and Delta are my favorite. The first two because of the TVs and newer planes. A few months ago, I was on brand new Jet Plane one month old, smelled like a new car.
I'm shocked that Southwest isn't in first place! If you haven't flown Southwest you're missing out on the BEST customer service in the industry, hands down. They're policies are so customer-friendly that I often wonder how they're able to make profit! My favorite thing about Southwest is the ability to change your flight without a fee. That flexibility really gives you peace of mind knowing that if something unexpected comes up you can change your dates. I also love that there's no baggage fee and I've yet to encounter and unfriendly flight attendant. That's a lot more than I can say about Delta, United, and U.S. Airways.

Me too! Plus it is a lot more pleasant atmosphere flying out of Chicago's Midway Airport rather than the monstrosity to the north.
Southwest is okay, but I think they are a bit overrated. I mean, lower fares doesn't equate to superior customer service. And in truth, Southwest's fares aren't always the lowest. Also, I personally am not a fan of Southwest's open seating policy. I also wish that Southwest would offer some form of in-flight entertainment on their aircraft.
I flew United last week to Wyoming and it was a very pleasant experience. I had requested a wheelchair for my mother-in-law and it was waiting for her at each airport. Everyone was helpful and some of the flight attentants even stopped and spoke with her.
JetBlue is undoubtedly the best American airline without question. Which other carriers offer direct TV on every economy seat. They also have great snacks.
Trust me, I have flown both Delta and Southwest, and I much prefer Delta. I had one of my best flights ever last June on a flight between San Juan and Atlanta, where every seat had on-demand movies. There is no way you will get that level of service on any Southwest flight. Also, Southwest's open seating policy is a joke; it is virtually impossible to get a good seat.
Air travel being what it is today, I will absolutely positively not go near a commercial airliner unless it was a life-or-death emergency.
Of the current majors, I'd say that Continental is probably the best.
The best airlines overall are now all gone: PSA, AirCal, Reno Air, National. THOSE were some great carriers to fly on.
