did anyone else know about this???
that high priced Alaska Airlines now charges $15.00 first checked bag
$25.00 for second.........and get this--that is each way. Price gouging S.O.B.s
I didn't know about that until after I booked my flight.
So me being me, I call to complain today and the CSR says they do it to keep prices down!! LMAO
So I say-well you are one of THE highest priced airlines in the country so I don't "get" how it's helping. This will be my last flight with them. I used all my frequent flyer miles so I'm done with them.

k......vent over.......carry on.......
Unfortunately this is now standard practice throughout most airlines when traveling domestically.
I totally agree. Can you imagine Delta if you don't check your bag online they will charge you $5.00 more at the airport.
We have been lucky when we use only carry on's- so no charge. It is a pain but we're not giving them any more money. Plus the airfares are not reasonable anymore-especially for us to be unlucky not flying in or out of a major hub.

If people would simply avoid some of these airlines things would improve. Of course that is easier said than done. Currently only Southwest does not charge for bags. Of coure the most sensible method for the airlines is to simply raise their fares. It may not be what the public wants, but it is the most sensible. Charging extra for bags, for food, for entertainment on the planes has gone beyond ridiculous. One European airline is in talks to charge to use the restroom. It would not surprise me at all if eventually American carriers tried the same foolishness.
Doesn't it ever cross people's minds. If the airlines are in such financial difficulty that they need all these ignorant charges. Well then just how does the flying public really know they are maintaining thier aircraft properly. Sure they are checked but how well. When you need money things don't always get done properly.

It is always possible to avoid traveling on airlines that charge checked baggage fees (which is now standard practice on most US airlines) as sometimes you need to fly to a destination that isn't served by airline that doesn't have checked baggage fees.
As for the European airline (which I believe is Ryanair) which wants to charge to use the restroom (which is crazy) is one that flies short distances (average flying time is around an hour or so I have been told).
Has the price of airline tickets really gone up? In 1987 a really good 21 day advance purchase supersaver round trip ticket between Anchorage and Seattle was almost $600. That same ticket today is under $500. By the time you add in all the extras such as checked bags and buying some food on the flight, it works out to about $600. Sure, along the way there have been specials. I have seen airfares for under $200. However those specials contributed to airlines pulling out of the Alaska market or failing altogether.

Yep;they are all doing it. Pretty soon you will see it in adjusted dollars as costly to fly as it was in the 50-60's.Then it was too high for middle class people to fly routinely.
