If you don't mind travelling a bit, try the Harmon Meadow area of Secausus, NJ. Hubby and I have stayed in a few hotels there. They're near a big shopping center (which was great when we got snowed in). A NJ transit bus goes by every 15 minutes, and it gets you to Port Authority in 20 minutes.

New York City doesn't want anyone to visit anymore unless they are very
wealthy!! The City slaps a huge tax on hotel and food that eliminates many
"middle class" families and others who would like to visit. As a kid growing up
(25 years ago), my family vacationed there every summer. It was affordable to my parents, kid friendly and to this day, I am also very fond of the City.
Unfortunately, the high prices no longer allow me to visit. Oh well, I'm glad
I had those memories of this once great City.

I would try priceline, you usually get to choose an area and you might get something nicer than a 1 or 2*.

There is a Red Roof Inn in the area of the Empire State building. Pretty updated and refurbished. It sometimes is reasonable. But, the taxes bring the price up.....watch for that.
I always liked to stay in the city, so I could go in and out when I'd like and walk in the early AM to the News Shows that are filming.
There is a certain feeling to be in and involved with the nightlife and action.

Although this really does depend on when you go. We went the first weekend in december and paid $235 for a whole in the wall, but it did have private bath

Some friends and I stayed @ the Ramada New Yorker a few weeks ago, which has been mentioned here... It was small, clean, old, but fine and convenient to stuff...
I think it was $189 for 2 doubles that weekend, not sure abt a single queen...

You might want to try the Hotel Chelsea on 23rd (they are doing some crazy promo offer lately) and the Gershwin on 29th I believe.
Other than that, Try the Courtyard and Double Tree in Jersey City. They are right across the street from the PATH train and you are in Manhattan in literally 3 minutes.
