Default Driving Jax FL to CT

This probably has been discussed before,in past I would cut off 95 at Richmond and drive to Staunton get on 81 up to 78 and evenually 84.
My question is there any way around I 95 mess from Richmond/Fredricksberg onward thru Washington etc. to CT or is I 81 with extra miles better??Input appreciated.

I guess it depends on the time of day you expect to hit the major cities with the I95 route (DC, NYC ?, and the Merritt Pkwy in CT).

The Richmond area on 95 is not bad and there is always the bypass if you want to avoid it completely.
We've decided the bypass wasn't worth the extra '20' miles.
At Ruther Glen, Va you can pick up 301 and meander on basically decent roads and pick up 95 again right around Wilmington, just south of Philly.
It's a bit slower with a few small towns to go through, but no more time if you get caught sitting in a traffic tieup around Washington.
Certainly no worse, timewise, than 81 since it keeps you on the east side of Washington.

It's a pretty ride up through rural Maryland for much of it.

I guess I will try again since my experience on I 95 from Fredricksburgh thru Washington,Baltimore,NJ,NY have been horrible.
I was looking at exit 33 Fredricksburgh and see what looks like double highway with no route number going up to I 66,west.I would than use I 81 north to I 78 east to go around bad area.
My question is at exit 33 west ( I 95 ) to I 66 west, is this a fair road to travel on a sunday?
