This place recently popped up on my radar of places I want to go so I'm reviving this thread. If anyone else has had any experiences with Mauritius, I'd love to hear them. There don't seem to be many threads about it.

I'm going there in January 2017...

If I remember to get back to this thread, I'll give some impressions...

I hope this thread continues to be updated. It's definitely an off-the-beaten-path destination, and I love to hear more about those!

It's no longer "off the beaten path". It's really become the new in-place for the European jet set crowd, kind of a closer version of Fiji and Tahiti with some very expensive resort/over-the-ocean type accomodations popping up like crazy.

However, when it comes down to it, it's just another beach vacation. That works for those Europeans with the crappy cold beaches in the UK and Germany and a more exclusive alternative to Greece or Southern Spain, or Sharm in Egypt. In the US we have plenty of beautiful beaches to choose from.

I'm interested in it because of the mix of Indian and African heritages (and decent number of Hakka Chinese too, which I am)

Cool. On second thought my post above I think I was thinking about Seychelles or Maldives, based on some vacation research I was doing about a year ago (where I dismissed them as somewhere I did not want to go) also in the Indian Ocean but more "exclusive resort only" type vacation.
Mauritius looks much more interesting.

Yeah, I mean I'm certainly no expert on Mauritius or beach destinations in general, so this is just what interests me based on my very limited knowledge.
