Default United tries $249 fee to check luggage for a year

CHICAGO — United Airlines put a new twist on baggage fees Monday, introducing a sort of all-you-can-carry fee for luggage.

The airline said travelers could pay $249 for the right to check two bags every time they fly United or United Express for a year.

Unreal.

That is about 8 roundtrip flights with United to justify paying the fare. If you fly United only THAT MUCH, then you should at least be some sort of airline elite like Premier Executive who don't have to pay fees anyhow.

first, i love the bags fly free southwest ad on the right of that article

2nd, if you could use it for everyone in your booked party it could make sense

for example, if I had the year pass and bought tickets for my wife & I and both of us were able to check 2 bags for that $249 that would be $200 against that cost for that round trip

depends on how much you fly and how much you bring - if you check 2 bags it's $100 per person per roundtrip

I don't understand why people need to take so much crap with them when they travel. I recently did a month in the UK and I took a daypack and a laptop, and had plenty of "stuff" with me.

Yeah ... but when you came back your clothes were so rigid you needed an extra seat for them to sit in

They're not so backward in the UK that they don't have laundromats. Most hotels have them now, too.

Of course ... and I apologize for my feeble attempt at humor

Any way to relieve the customer of their funds. They are banking on people paying the fee and not flying enough to use the service. I do not like United after I had an extremely rude customer service agent several years ago. I swore I'd never fly UA unless I had no other choice. So far I haven't flown them.

I had the same experience ... the same with Horizon too. I haven't flown either since
