You are in no way superior to the peasants you talk down to here, you have just had the fortune of being born in a country that offered more opportunities.
And do you want a surgeon caring for you or someone you care about wearing a hanky, or a surgical mask?

 What are you talking about?
I do not "look down upon" anyone. The peasants in the over-polluted Chinese cities wear masks because they have to. I don't look down on them for that, I feel bad for them for that. If I were in their shoes, I'd do the same. But I'm not. I don't have to worry about what they are worrying about. This flu business is not going to be staved off, as another poster already pointed out, by a mask.
As for a surgeon, a surgeon should wear a surgical mask. I would wear a surgical mask if I were performing any surgery, but since I'm not a surgeon, I won't. I'd use a hanky. I don't understand what you're asking this question for, it has no relevance.

Sir, one cannot work on a laptop whilst "using a hanky". I own a business and had work to do on the plane. Furthermore, I don't care who may or may not think me boorish or "peasant-like" for wearing a mask. I sir, am no peasant.
Tell Dr. Timothy Johnson (ABC News Medical Correspondent) to stop recommending wearing a mask on planes if you are of higher authority.

May I remind that the sick passenger may not have had a flu of any sort. He may have had something that the mask MAY have protected me from.
I take vitamins as well... but, since I have the luxury of earning my living in the comfort of my own home, I do not get out much and am not exposed to what's going around. My focus was to do all I can to avoid becoming sick. Irregardless of wether or not I was fashionable. I do not consider air travel to be a "fashion opp" in the first place.... a coach seat on a domestic flight is not an "occasion"... a place to care about "being seen." I will use the kerchief in my clutch when I'm at dinner. The bottom line is, I felt better wearing a mask, period.

I rarely, if ever work on my laptop when I fly. I only used to do that back when I was less responsible and traveled unprepared for my job. I never said you are a peasant, but to me it is "peasant-like" to wear the mask; but you don't care that I think that, so what's the problem?

Different doctors offer different advice. Some doctors say the masks don't really help, though most will err on the side of advising people to wear a mask since it "can't hurt". I've flown enough in my lifetime to know that while I can get sick from flying and breathing recirculated air, there are ways to prevent it that don't require wearing a mask.
Furthermore, I firmly believe that even if you wear a mask, you're still just as likely to get the germ by picking it up on your hands, clothes, etc. and later transferring it to your blood by touching your eyes, nose, ears, etc. Washing hands is a far better way of avoiding germs. There are more germs on those seats than in the cabin air.

I don't consider air travel to be a "fashion opp" either. Usually I wear old clothes that I immediately change out of and don't wear again for the rest of the trip, because I have just been sitting in other people's filth and germs for hours on the plane.
But anyway, if you feel better wearing a mask, go for it. I don't. I think it looks silly and I won't wear one over a minor thing like "the flu" (which is something that comes around every single year, anyway - it's nothing new). If you don't care what I think then I don't see why this is an issue for you at all; wear your mask and enjoy.

Well, it is peasant-like. We don't live in a third-world country. As much as I understand that it helps some people feel better, the fact remains that it smacks of living in a poor, third-world city. It's like owning a brand new lexus but then drilling a hole in the doors so you can put a chain and padlock for added security because it makes you feel more secure. I'm sure that can only help, but it kind of defeats the purpose of owning a Lexus.
Wearing a mask on a plane kind of defeats the purpose of traveling to different places and all that goes with it, such as eating in restaurants, staying in hotels, etc.
I think if people are that afraid of germs and viruses it doesn't even make sense they would travel and expose themselves to a multitude of opportunities by which they can get sick, yet single out the single portion of flying as the place to take such an odd-looking precaution of wearing a mask.
I think it would make much more sense to me if I were seeing people wearing masks everywhere and doing other things like wiping down everything they touch with alcohol or wet-wipes, but I don't see that kind of panic, so the panic in the skies doesn't make sense to me.

Flying home from Houston a few months ago I noticed 2 passengers wearing masks, I made sure to do some good coughing as they walked by.

After having a sinus infection last week I'm stuck with the dry smokers cough even though I don't smoke. I'm sure I'd give some people a scare

In agreement with Pitroad, obviously some on this thread think they're better than others. Sad that Mr. "I'm a Lexus" is missing the whole point to life, except maybe his own creed of "he who dies feeling superior, wins". You don't deserve any more of my time/attention on this website, my friend.
Sad also, that some people will go out of their way to try to scare someone or ruin their day by deliberately making them feel more uncomfortable, (by coughing) just to be a jerk.
I just wanted to post a nice story. Just as expected, in came the vultures. It's too bad people can't just share positive experiences on the internet without trolls, killjoys and just plain jerks.
So, everyone who's not a jerk, do me a favor.... leave rep points if you wish, but don't post on this thread, as you would just be feeding the negative.
