Default rental cars- what is going on?

I'm booking travel for Thanksgiving and of course airfare has increased, hotel rates have increased, and car rentals have increased.

It's possible to get exceptional rates for flights and hotels- catch promos, online search engines, etc.

But I've not come up with anything for car rentals. I've booked Hertz for 3 days for 160 bucks, oh, it's not but 35 a day but by the time they add on all the fees/taxes/etc, the price is almost doubled.

Anyone have any good 'promo codes' or coupon codes for Hertz or other rental car companies? This would be Thurs thru Sun.

Thanks!

I don't think that's anything new. As long as I've been renting cars I remember that the fees add up to anywhere from 25-50% of the overall cost. I used to get rates in Vegas for cars for $120 a week and it would still cost close to $200 (without insurance).

I officially hate rental companies. The only place you can get them good is Florida. The rest of the country sucks as far as I know.

And I dont know what the hell is with that 25 bucks a day crap for under 25. Then they want to charge insurance? Well what the hell am I paying an extra 25 bucks for then? That should be full coverage right?

I had no trouble using my debit card in Florida, yet I go to 2 different states and they want to run a credit check? **** that I'll drive my own ****

Rental cars is what paid for the new football stadium in Phoenix. I don't think the rental car company is getting any of those fees. They either go to the airport for providing the facilities, the county or the state.

Its all a form of tax.

I would rather them price it with everything included than to say "Hot Deals $19 per day!"

Just round it to the nearest dollar the amount it'll actually be instead of getting my hopes up

What you need is a UK driving licence. My husband booked a car at the weekend that was $550 if using our US address, $350 with a UK address. Its mad!

What the poster above said is very true!!
Last time we needed a rental car (last september) we hdecided to rent via Hertz France to get the best fare possible! Any rental agency here in the US was still very pricey. Fortunately we still have a bank account in France as well as our French driving licence so we tried from there, and it worked very well. INCREDIBLE!

Get on the phone with a friend or relative, and try booking your car simultaneously, and compare what you get. My friend in South Carolina wanted to rent a car in Houston when she was coming here. I kept getting a rate that was about $25 less per day than she did, even though we were entering exactly the same information. They must be reading the IP addresses on line, and giving different rates to people booking from different states.

one thing I learned is if you secure the rental away from the airport it's usually cheaper.
