Take a vacation on an Amtrak train, (sleeper car of coarse) to anywhere and back. The food I had in the dining car was really good when I rode on the Empire Builder, I had salmon and it was very fresh. I know fresh salmon too, I lived in a house for ten years where I could catch salmon from my front porch. It's also easy to meet folks from all over riding the train that are very willing to chat you up. Sleep in privacy and comfort, eat gourmet meals, enjoy scenery from the observation car that you will never see from a highway and lots of nice friendly folks to schmooze with. It sounds like a perfect vacation to me and not that expensive.

OP indicated that he/she wanted to fly... so I'd suggest flying into Seattle, spending a couple days there, then taking the train up to Vancouver. Vancouver is the most beautiful city on earth IMO and you'd have a lot of fun.

Your daughter would likely qualify for lower airfares (google 'student airfare' for more info). She could get a roundtrip ticket from Dallas to London for $570 for example lol...

It depends on the time of year. Seattle and Vancouver are among the most expensive cities to travel in (having just returned from vacation in both cities). Most of the cheap accommodations in Vancouver are the student residences at Simon Fraser and UBC and those are only available May-August.

And the weather this time of year is damp, very damp with day after day of rain.
