Anyone been to Africa? I recommend Uganda.
I recently returned from living in Uganda for 2 years (volunteer) and as a safari destination I highly recommend it. Ugandans are lovely people, the country is peaceful, scenery and wildlife spectacular. As with all/most countries in Africa you can't drink the water and must be careful about what you eat, take anti-malarials, etc. I recommend going with one of the tour companies who will do all the bookings and the driving. Do not rent a car and do your own driving--leave it to the people that know the roads/drivers.
I have an extensive blog about our time in Uganda if anyone is interested.

No, never been.
I can't be bothered with all these precautions.

I have been to Botswana & South Africa. I would highly recommend Botswana as the "jewel" of Southern Africa. Botswana is safe for visitors.

Out of curiosity, what volunteer program did you do?

I've heard Botswana is very safe. I've been to South Africa (which inspired my husband to volunteer) and I was very nervous about the high amount of violent crime there.
My husband volunteered with VSO UK (voluntary service overseas), somewhat similar to the Peace Corps. He trained teachers at a primary teachers college and I accompanied him, of course. I enjoyed the 2 years very much, not all of it, but overall it was a fantastic experience.

I did not go with a volunteer program. I went to visit someone who was working in Botswana temporarily. During that time I went on some safari stuff in Northern Botswana (Kasane/Chobe & Zambezi river area) besides visiting Gaborone (the capital of Botswana). I also visited Johannesburg in South Africa as well as some safari stuff in that area(the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site: Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site ).
The difference in safety between Botswana & South Africa is quite extreme. (Botswana is very safe whereas South Africa is not.)

I believe the volunteer questions was directed at me.
I felt very unsafe in South Africa except for the area around Clarens near Lesotho. The signs on the highways stating the area was high risk for hijacking was especially scary seeing as how the criminals don't just steal, they kill their victims. Beautiful country though.

I've met a few from Africa who came here to escape violence. It's very interesting to read about the safe areas: thank you, posters & OP!
All the people I met from Africa were pharmacists except in about 1982 I met some brothers from Nigeria who were taxi drivers during spring break in Chicago. When not drivers, they were university students - brothers with different mothers but same father. Very nice people, all the Africans I've met.

Ugandans are very friendly, helpful people. We were very sad to leave many of the friends we made while living there. Really lovely people.
