Route from WA to WV (routes, map, winter, drive)

I am going to drive from Washington State to West Virginia in January. I have googled Map Quest etc., etc. One route takes me on I-84 through Oregon, Idaho, Utah, I-70 Colorado, Kansas, I-64 Missouri, Kentucky. Would that be trouble in Winter?

I'm also considering I-5 and then I-40, if the northern routes would give me problems with icy or snowy roads, but that would be a long trip.

Can anybody give me advice on what route to take to avoid closed roads due to snow or ice?

Any help would be great.
