Good Evening all,

If you read my earlier post you will know how miserable of a flight I had squashed into coach coming home the other day. My question is this, right after Christmas Id like to travel to LA/Orange County area and this time want to do it first class, am I better to try to get an upgrade or go ahead and pay full fare which is admittedly not too bad ($980 total round-trip with delta)? I used to travel first class almost all the time as a non rev passenger since my mom works for AA but that free benefit ended three years ago when I hit 21...Thanks in advance for any advice!

Do you mean purchase an upgrade at the gate (as, you know of course getting upgrades just for "asking nicely" or one of those other tricks that people claim work is impossible)?

I would usually say your chance of gate purchase of an upgrade is slim to none, as the elite flyers will fill them up (even non-revs don't stand a chance anymore). But, if indeed you are traveling a day or two after xmas then there will not be many business travelers, hence not many elites. You might have a small chance.

I think to ensure you fly in First Class, you're going to have to cough up the extra money at the time of purchase.

Thanks for the replies, ultimately I will just need to pay full price it looks like I was just hoping maybe someone here had good luck getting discount upgrades with delta, is $980 a good price for round trip FC norfolk to LAX? to me it sounded pretty cheap comparatively

Usually they seem to have these tickets marked way up if you buy them, but I have often gotten a upgrade on US Air or Northwest/Delta for $50 or $150 on checkin.
