I'm taking a Greyhound trip from Toronto, ON to Nashville, TN with one transfer on the holidays. I'll be leaving at a real busy time... Wish I could've flown instead but flights are expensive this time of year. Last summer American Airlines lost my luggage bag and I didn't receive it for a day, that was awful. I am extremely paranoid of bringing a large luggage bag with me on this bus trip and would rather be able to take EVERYTHING (my bag and purse) with me on the bus on my seat/in the upper compartment with me for the whole trip and not have it locked up underneath in the compartment. I've heard too many stories of lost luggage, and stolen luggage between transfers. I'm packing about 10-15 days worth of clothes and a couple Christmas presents, it looks like a medium sized duffel bag may do. Has anybody got away with just taking a purse and a medium-large sized duffel bag on as a carry-on and not having to check their baggage? Should I not worry about the lost luggage stories and just go ahead and take my giant luggage bag so that I can pack even more stuff? So lost on what to do. Stressed out and losing sleep over this. I am scared of this trip, never taken a long bus ride before.
Greyhound will not allow one to keep bags in the bus aisle. So any carry-on baggage must be able to fit either in the storage bin above one's head or underneath your feet (and seat in front of you).
I'm not sure how luggage on Greyhound could be "lost". After all, you see it loaded into the bus before you board, or you load it yourself. When you get off, your baggage is usually handed to you by the driver or you unpack it yourself.
"Stolen" could be a problem. It hasn't been on my Greyhound trips, but I could see this being an easy scam to pull. Still, it seems like it would be a bit of a crapshoot for the thief- most people are just going to have fairly worthless clothes. If I were a criminal, it certainly wouldn't be my target of choice!
I'd probably check the baggage and not worry about it too much. Just keep an eye out at the big transfer stations.

Not true. I was on a bus from Cincinnati - Cleveland a few years ago with a connection in Columbus. I ended up in Cleveland, my bags in Pittsburgh. In other words, they put it on the wrong bus at the connection point. Fortunately, I could borrow some clothes from my father-in-law.
I recently did some busing (hadn't been on one in 25 years) between cities in the lower Midwest and I had that fear as well, losing my luggage.
Generally, they tagged it in the terminal and you watched it being loaded before you entered the bus. I usually sat on the right side of the bus, so when we made a stop, I could see what luggage was being carted away.
Never had any problems whatsoever. Less worry than checking bags at an Airport.
the spaces above the seats are really small. even standard airline carry on is hard to fit.
you are going to have to check it in. just watch me load and unload. valuable stuff keep on your person no diamonds in the duffle bag please.
