Is there such thing as an open reservation to a hotel? (Spain, visa)

Hi. I'll be travelling to Spain in a couple of months, I have to be there by the beginning of February, I'm travelling as a student with a student visa. However, here's the deal, one of the requirements for the student visa is to have a hotel reservation, now...I could reserve a hotel but how would I know the exact day I would arrive since I won't be told when I'm going to receive my visa? Can I just reserve it without having an exact date? What do I do in this case?
