How do you know how much to take on a vacation? How do you budget for the trip?

It depends where you're going.
If we go to Europe, we have a general idea of where we will be staying and how much lodging will cost.
We plan a flexible itinerary, with the knowledge that there will be meals and admission fees to consider.
We generally stay at cheapo places, but sprinkle our trip with sporadic splurges.
We do not bring tons of cash.
We usually bring two credit cards, and keep them in separate places.

One can take credit or debit cards and in many places make local cash withdrawals from local ATM/cash machines.

Yeah, there is that trite but true saying:

When preparing to travel, lay out all of your clothes and all of your money.
Then take half the clothes and twice the money.

No matter how carefully I budget for a trip, and no matter how much I take with, I always economize like crazy the first part of the trip, worrying I'm going to run low on money. It's stupid, as I've never run out of money on a trip.

But the nice thing about that type of madness, is I've always got lots of money left toward the end, and the last days are the days of luxury for me, the best part of the trip spending all that extra money I foolishly saved.

Rather that, then have to economize like crazy at the end of the trip.
