Looking for a beachy Bahamas vacation and these are the 2 major cities. Has anyone visited both and can compare and contrast?

My first impressions are Nassau is the more happening place, and has Paradise Island but is more touristy and perhaps more crime. Whereas Freeport area is more just beachy and quieter.

Is that fair and can you add to that?

Also what activites do you recommend at these places aside from snorkeling and laying on the beach Thanks

Do you have to go to the Bahamas? I'd be looking at Grand Cayman. It will be warmer and it's a LOT safer.

yes not my decision

I would of preferred something like St John's; hadn't looked at Grand Cayman.

So with that said, I can push towards one of these 2 Bahamas options so trying to make the best of it ... hah.

Nassau. Freeport had nothing going for it, imo, and was full of college kids. Annerk is correct though. We went to Freeport in Feb, and it was too cool to swim. The beach was ok, but it wasn't really a tropical scenario. The casinos on Nassau give you plenty of night time options.

Yes, we are going in late February as well which is why farther south in other islands made more sense to me. I did not think about the spring break crowd - didn't realize they would be hitting up Freeport. Thanks for the tip.

Well the waters wont be too cold to swim in they wont get below 70-72 imo. Too cold for someone from Florida to swim in but once your in the water it should be fine. But there will be plenty of nice sun and proably no rain.
Freeport does not compare to Nassau. Freeport has its hotels and a tourist area or two but Nassau is much nicer and busier. Also probably cheaper to fly into.

I have never stayed off of Paridise Island though. My family has a time share in Nassau on paridise and I have stayed at Atlantis Before.

Atlantis is great, the water park and resort area is very nice and lots of fun. The Casino is great, the food is good but expensive. I suggest to eat once in a while on the Main area in Nassau there is a some great seafood there. During the Day travel to Downtown Nassau one day a shop around. At night I would stay on Paridise Island it has much more to do. The Tourist Areas of Nassau are not dangerous at all IMO. Yes there are some robberies and things but there is not much violent crime in those areas. Dont be surprised if someone offers you drugs or something of that nature though but this can be expected in most of the region.
The Comedy Show in Atlantis is pretty good and only $20 a person. There is also a decent night club there too.

If you're looking at the differences between the two, I would suggest the following site, and you can use this site to compare and contrast the two with their informative articles, and tours in Freeport, and Nassau Bahamas:

I would suggest Nassau, if it were my choice, because there is a little bit more of a variety of things to do, and places to see, but I'll let you judge that for yourself. Have a good vacation either way!

Nassau.

Nassau has Potter's Cay and Goldie's. They keep all the tourists in the New Paradise Island vicinity. So you can escape that tourist trap and actually see a little bit of the Bahamas. It would be better still if you could go to Eleuthera or Green Turtle Cay or similar.

But I've always liked Nassau.

I would go to Nassau, went to Freeport this past May and while I enjoyed it and the weather was great, there wasn't much to do.

And a lot more expensive. LOVE Grand Cayman but I'm a diver so obviously I would...it's the best diving in the world. But I also love the Bahamas. I guess I just love anywhere with clear water and nice people.
