Normally, 8 days prior to travel is the amount of time that the government suggests that Canadians should apply for an Indian eVisa. But with the reliable online services for the global customer, 4 days is the maximum for an eVisa to be granted. If you are in a rush, you can even get an Indian eVisa withing 1 business day.
Notice that the visa fee is non-refundable so the Government will NOT refund the fee if you cancel your visa.
However, if you choose indianvisagov.com services, you will have a chance to get back your money by their flexible refund policy for denied case and cancellation.
If you are a Canadian, American, British, Australian, Japanese, or European citizen but you or your father or his father, your mother or her mother or her father, or your wife or your wife's mother or her father was born in Pakistan, then none of these rules apply to you there.
There are separate rules which basically mean, you should not even think about applying for an India visa on your American or Canadian or British or Australian or Japanese or European passport. Your passport will be "lost" at least for 6 months before the consulate either refuses visa or tells you F off, and get a new passport.

Ha ha ha That's funny but it has always been a nightmare for citizens or ex-citizens of two countries to visit each other. In olden days, there was a concept of city visa. So if an Indian citizen is visiting a relative in Karachi, he will be given visa specific for Karachi. He / She will need to report periodically at the police station to ensure that he is not in some other city. Same thing for Pakistani people visiting India. City specific and attendance at police station .
There is nobody to listen to the woes of western countries citizens with ancestral connections and visiting each other countries. Still hats off to the visitors who bravely overcome all this bureaucratic nightmare . Probably Relatives and Religious visits are the main reasons for travel.
