Maybe you could try this:

CouchSurfing - Participate in Creating a Better World, One Couch At A Time

I know people who have found accomodation this way in several countries and always enjoyed it!

I am very impressed and will keep that in mind.
You can really get to know a place if you have the time; if someone is willing to get to know my pets, so much the better.

I was going to suggest Couchsurfing, we have participated on both ends of it and found it very worthwhile--but I am not sure about a month-long stay, usually a day or two is how it works.
OTOH, Couchsurfing is how my kid ended up finding a place to live. It is a good way to meet people and learn about new places.

Thanks. I thought about subletting too, but I don't really know where to go to find them. Here it's easy. You simply go to Craigslist. I will go through the links. Thanks. Even if the hotels were to give me a better deal for long term, it would probably still be 100 a night, I think. That's 3000 bucks for an entire month.

I've stayed in this studio apartment (owned by an American living in Paris) and thought it was terrific. Can't remember the rates, but expect that they'll do a deal for a month's rental.

Our family of 4 stayed in an apt in Paris for a couple of weeks at the end of our RTW trip and it was a very pleasant experience and we loved our landlady. It was tiny but we didn't care since we didn't spend much time there and after a RTW, it seemed spacious. I don't remember how much it was but it was the most reasonable of the options we considered. I think a home exchange would be great, but it would be easier to find a Parisian willing to occupy your home in Oxford than in Houston--and then to find someone who wants to spend just the same amt of time in your place that you want to spend in theirs. . . Just a thought. There are websites to find apartment rentals for tourists but I don't have the addresses. We used BootsnAll Travel Network :: Travel Community, Travel Stories, Cheap Tickets, Youth Hostels and all your travel needs a lot to plan our trip.
