Where are you staying? Ft. Lauderdale has some nice beaches and has a place called Las Olas for night but its nothing great. You might want to rent a car and drive down to Miami Beach and Miami for dinner and if you want to go to any night clubs or anything like that. The drive is only about 30-45 minutes a Cab would cost over $60.

Cab from the Airport to the beach I would imagine would run around $15-25 depending on where you are staying. I imagine your flying into Ft. Lauderdale and not Miami?

What are you looking at doing just sititng on the beach or some more exciting stuff too?

Well then I suggest go to Ft. Myers or Key West because Ft. Lauderdale is just a large suburb of Miami. It has its own things going you can stay in the area and enjoy it but I would not go there to avoid Miami.

I am sure someone that lives in Ft. Lauderdale and not Miami can have some more input on what to do there.

I suggest you explore the Ft. Lauderdale waterways using the water taxi: Water Taxi - "More than just a boat ride!"
You get an all day pass for $15. It is a nice way to see the area.

2nd the water taxi's as a fun (leisurely) way to get around. Check the route 1st and find a place to stay within a few blocks of a stop. It can be hard to get a ride in one of the busy stops in the middle and we passed up quite a few p*ssed off looking folks because we were full. Los Olas is towards the end and had plenty of room by the time we got there.

these are taken (March '07) from the taxi and the drivers will point out the homes and yachts of the rich and famous...

Los Olas Art Festival...
