That is generally NOT true. When Southwest lowers the fares, the legacy airlines usually match the fares. Look at American's $39 sales which was announced about 36 hours after Southwest's.

But let's assume American and Southwest have IDENTICAL fares in the same market.

With American, you will pay baggage fees, you pay a change fee if you need to cancel or reschedule and the like. And just MAYBE you will fly in a real jet instead of one of those regionals with a $25k pilot. You will have no leg room. And pity if you don't gold or platinum status as you will be reminded of it constantly.

With Southwest, you get two bags free, no change fees, and good service no matter your status.

$39 fares are unsustainable. They will go out of business if they sold all their tickets at that cost.

I agree with every point you make but I also know that they sometimes do have higher fares.

I agree.

I fly Southwest a lot (A listed) and, on the routes I fly, they beat US Air (the main alternative) every time for punctuality, comfort and service.

Not as fast as American will in matching the fares ... with its higher cost structures.

At $39 OW, which is generally NOT available at PEAK times, they are filling seats that would otherwise go unfilled.

Are most of the domestic airlines charging $25 now each way for a checked bag? My daughter told me that only Southwest and Jet Blue don't charge. Mu grand daughter and a friend are going to Florida for spring break and have decided they will take one checked bag between them so it will only cost them $12.50 each. Then they will also have one carry on each. Clothing is light for Florida so I'm sure this will work for them.

Airlines are not in unison with this. I just flew back on Horizon and the first bag is $15, second is $25. My second bag was borderline as a carry-on, so I used the Ala Carte service to store that bag.

They differ in their fees.

I always return with more than I left with. I tend to buy things on my trips, so I always include a soft extra bag that I can fold into my carry-on for my destination.
