Lucerne and Munich are very different. The one is a very walkable town while the other is a large city.

Lucerne is on a lake, Munich is not. Lucerne is surrounded by mountains, Munich is not. Lucerne is likely to be more expensive than Munich but not be a huge amount.

I vote for Luzerne, and especially if you are with a *loved one*, take a trip on the *Night Boat*.
The trip leaves around the beginning of evening, has *funny* entertainment and something to eat, usually Cheese fondue.
I would not blow their Alpen horn, because everybody else has taken that thing into their mouths ....

You will not be sorry to have done that as the *last thing* on your trip ! ?
Where does Luzern fit into your trip *geographically* ?

As Jaggy has said, Luzerne is a great place to *stroll* in. Right next to the lake is the bridge (Pic 2) that is a good place to spend and have a small lunch. Feed the birds around the lake and get clobbered by them, ....literally...
If you have a car, you can drive *around* the Vierwaldstaetter See. Beautiful views, better than Munich, (my opinion, and I have lived and worked in both areas).
For *Impressive* check out Munich, For *Quaint*, I prefer Luzerne.
If you *miss* McDonalds, check out McCheaper ....
Not sure if still there ... Pics were taken in the mid 80's.

Just for fun...
When we lived there, a *lifelong friend* visited us and we showed her around. We stopped by a *cheese shop* and she asked the girl behind the counter:
USA: Do you speak English ?
Swiss: Yez, Aiee speek Eenglish ..
USA: Do you have some Swiss cheese ?
Swiss: (looks at USA a bit funny and then says: while pointing to ALL the cheeses ..)
Sweesh Tseesh, Sweesh Tseesh, Sweesh Tseesh, Sweesh Tseesh
Nuff sed ....

Pic 3 >> We stayed here in the village of Buochs south of Luzern (the yellow building)
The lake is 50 metres in front of the hotel.
Pic 5 >> Geesj .... Check out that *instamatic Kodak Camera* Grandma has !!!!!!

Thanks for the replies. Since it's both our first time, we wanted to do the typical cities Paris, Amsterdam, Venice, Florence, and Rome. Which again leaves us room for one more city. We have planned a route incorporating both cities in so it wouldn't be a problem geographically if we decided between one or the other. Keep the opinions coming! Thank you.

I have been to Munich a few times on business and, in my view, it doesn't compare to the other cities mentioned.I think you will enjoy Lucerne and, perhaps, find it restful after the bustle of the other places.
