How can they make money with these prices? I just booked a package deal to Cozumel through Orbitz for 8 days and with a $200 off coupon I got a pretty amazing deal! Now, they even have $400 for 4+ nights in the Bahamas...that makes the cost 50% of what you would separately pay for the hotel and flight...how do they make money?

Well, consolidators buy huge blocks of tickets, right?
And different consolidators have relationships with different airlines.
I do wonder if the profit margin might be kind of slim these days.
The thing is, the consolidators themselves seem to be consolidating.
I guess we the travelers just have to tread carefully but when we see a good deal, grab it, like you did.

Way to go!

Orbitz is one of the sites I've never been able to use as right before I "submit", I go to the hotel's site and the airline to compare...and it's been cheaper to book directly. But I've never tried Cozumel.

Have a great time!

Once I booked a room for one night through Orbitz and found out that I could have paid $30 less had I booked directly at the hotel. It was an 'oops!' that she let slip, and I was NOT happy. I'm sure that some good deals can be obtained through Orbitz, but one bad experience is usually enough to lose my business.

I like to mostly book things myself--if there is a screw-up, I know who to blame.
I would be careful with any package deal these days.
If something sounds too good to be true...

I've used Orbitz a few times and have always had good experiences with them. The one time I had a slight problem with them, I emailed them from work and they replied fairly quickly (within a couple hours) and then called them when I got home and they resolved the situation. It usually is cheaper to book directly, but if I have promotion codes, then it will usually be quite a bit cheaper to go through Orbitz so I'll do that in those cases.

Dang, sounds like you got an awesome deal! Ive never used Orbits, but maybe when/if I take my vacation this summer sometime, might check it out. Ive used priceline, you can bid your own price, up to 40% cheaper than 'the other guys'. The only downfall with priceline though is you dont know what airline you'll be on, or what time of day your flight will be, going to or coming back from, your destinaton until after you pay. But theyve done me pretty good too.
