I don't think tripadvisor is a competitor to city data as they both have different agendas.

I've used tripadvisor for almost 10 years now and yes you do have to selectively judge certain things but it does help provide extra info about places you might be going. I've even written a number of reviews on it over the years. However I think their website needs an update. It's getting a bit too jumbled and bulky to use.

It's not tripadvisor itself, I think it's the forum. When I recommended the tripadvisor forums, it was edited out by a mod. Oops, sorry, "discussing moderation" again.

I always go to tripadvisor before booking anything. I've been a contributor for about 6 or 7 years. I always do a review of especially good or especially bad hotels. The forums are pretty good as well.
