Both cities are completely different. Zurich feels smaller and less industrial and has, IMHO, a much nicer old town. Negatives for Zurich are that it is horrendously expensive and they speak this weird Swiss German dialect.

Why either of the two big cities? Why big cities? I use Zurich's airport and central train station, nothing else. Between Milan and Zurich you have the Italian Alps, Lucerne, the Berner-Oberland, Lake Geneva, etc. A visit to either Italy or Switz should not be centered around visiting these two busy, crowded, hectic cities.

well, most visitors don't understand German so they would not know the difference or care anyway

Milan every time. I lived in Zurich and it was one of the most boring place on earth. Nice but boring. Mind you the whole of Switzerland was so sterile as to make Austria look like a refuse area... Which is saying quite a lot. I felt I was living in a hospital almost. It was bourgeois beyonf belief. Antispectic and dull as ditch water. Stunning scenery but goodness how boring.

I love Italy, not sure I could live there ( too chaotic for me) but compared to Switzerland it is so much nicer. Milan is a wonderful city, very vibrant and Italy generally has a "joie de vivre", a great big heart of life and exhuberance which can be hard to resist. Italians have a way to make you feel welcome, even in the North which is a little more reserved .

Milan is a great transportation hub as it is somewhat centered in western europe. Other than this I would not recommend this place. I was looking to exit the Milan after only a few hours there, its not really a tourist city. I have never been to Zurich but I have heard from many others that it is not that great of a tourist city either.

In either country, there are better choices.

Do you HAVE to go to either Milan or Zurich?

In Switzerland, out of the places I've been, I'd recommend Bern and Interlakken. Depending on the weather, a week between the two would satisfy you completely. Maybe less with less than ideal weather. There is more to do in Interlakken.

Italy is huge, with most well traveled areas likely being better than Milan. Depends on what you want to see.
