I've been searching and haven't been able to find a thread relevant.

We are trying to come up with a big summer vacation for our family. We're leaning more towards a beach vacation. We live in California (don't laugh -- I know we have the beach outside our door). We've never been to Hawaii and are considering it but aren't very excited. Lately, we've been thinking about Tahiti but haven't been able to find too many positive things about it and children. My husband brought up Euro Disney but I haven't hear anything good about it either. We have four girls under 8. They are well behaved and travel better than I do. Any input on Tahiti or other places we might enjoy?

Cook islands, or similar. Avoid tourist spots and get the kids in the back country and enjoy a totally different culture / quality of life. (No TV, No computers, just old fashioned... make your own fun with what you have at hand.)

get a place in a cove and find on old boat and let the kids explore. (on their own)

I suggest Israel. You have beaches, culture, history and Israeli society is very child-oriented.

The Cook Islands do sound inviting.

The girls will enjoy being on vacation with you but will probably not have a vivid memory of whatever destination you choose. I suggest you not go to the trouble of going to Europe for Euro-Disney. You could get an interesting beach vacation in Croatia or Greece.

But I think your best idea is Hawaii, and it's much closer to you.
I had always been dismissive of Hawaii until I read more about it.
When we finally went in 2002, I was blown away by the beauty, history and magic of the place. Watch the lava at Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, sleep in a treehouse in the rain forest, pick your own papaya breakfast, visit the USS Arizona Memorial at Honolulu, and take a helicopter ride over Kauai.
That vacation would be both exciting and fulfilling.
