It may be that the Administration will issue a moratorium on passports to Canada and Mexico, with the provision that an application is in place to help travelers. Here's the story:

Thanks for that post and information. My wife and I are waiting for our passports to be returned from the government at this time. We intended to visit Canada in the next month. However from the sound of what Iíve read here, it looks like we donít need to have it if we fly. The only problem is we are driving.

My biggest worry is that we had to send the ďoriginal birthĒ certificates to Washington. What do you think are the chances of getting them back?

When I applied for my passport back in 2004, my birth certificate was returned to me in the envelope along with my passport.

Iím hopeful that Iíll see my original again! If I remember correctly many years ago my Mother told me that the county courthouse that it was registered in burned down and everything was lost.

I donít trust the government agencies to return it and Iím afraid theyíll lose it.

I just heard on the news today that we will not need to worry about travel this summer because apps for passports have increased. They said that there is no way that everything can be processed and it would not be realistic to require passports at this time. I'm just still burned about the entire thing--I now need to get passports for the kids! Although I know things are different now with potential threats, it's still difficult for me to justify. We have a close friend who works for Customs, and he keeps telling me that it will make crossing easier and more efficient....hard to imagine, but I hope he's right!

Here is the site to check the status of your PP app.
it also tells you how to print your record of applying that you will need if you don't get it back in time for your trip .

Here's an article in LA Times that might inspire us all to make sure we get our passports before we need them.
