Could someone explain to me how these work, technically?
In other words, what exactly would you do if you wanted to go to the hotel pool, but leave most of your valuables in the safe (located in your room). What all would you need to take with you, and how would you carry it?
I've heard that they work by codes, but that you also need to use a coded card. I've never used or seen one.
You prick the finger and drop some blood in the slot, that takes your DNA and is used to know if your the right person wanting to open the safe. Not all safes are the same. Some use codes, some keys you get from the front desk, and some use your room card. When you get to the hotel, ask them. Or call the hotel in advance and ask them. Only they know what safes they use and what is the procedure for use.
Yea, I learned my lesson with safes! I will never use one again!
We were in Paris and about to go out. The hotel was an American chain, so it's not like some tiny boutique hotel. We went in the hallway, locked the door and went to the elevators. The maids were cleaning a few rooms down and saw us leave. Five minutes later, my husband decides to go back up to use the bathroom.
While he's in there, the phone rings. He doesn't answer and 20 seconds later, someone is opening our door. Now we've watched our share of travel shows, and this is one way they try to see if you're in the room. They call first, if no answer, they come. They saw us leave, so they assumed we had left. No one saw us re-enter.
Well, the maid that watched us leave came back! My husband quietly exited the bathroom to see what she was doing. She was in the closet, trying to get the safe open! She was so shocked when he finally spoke that she just ran out of the room and down the hall! Yea, from that point on, I carry everything with me and leave unnecessary things at home!
Why would anyone take anything on vacation that is so valuable that you'd need to put it in a safe?
I can understand why business travelers might need it, but tourists?
That makes no sense. What would a business traveler have that was so expensive, unless he was carrying jewels. If anything, I would think the average tourist would be carrying more valuables.

Depending on where I am I might have the following with me that I'd want to lock up:
House and car keys
Passports
Wallet
iPod
cell phone
certain prescription medications
wedding rings (I usually take my rings off before going into the ocean)
laptop
extra cash
