Hi, I have been thinking of visiting one of the caribbean islands but, of course, there are so many I am having trouble narrowing it down. I need it to be safe and I really enjoy hiking. I am not the type of person that would want to stay in an all inclusive resort and sit around and eat, drink and swim for my whole vacation. I want to get out and explore and possibly drive around the island. Would anyone have any recommendationsfor islands to visit or what islands to avoid? Thank you for any input.

many choices, Cozumel (Mexico), Dominican Republic, ABC islands...

I like Cozumel because of it's location at the very western edge of the Caribbean so you can ferry over to Playa Del Carmen for mainland activities as well.

I really liked Les Saintes just to the south of Guadeloupe. It is like being in France but with the benefits of being in the Carribean. It isn't big and bustling and has no airport. You get there by boat from Point a Pitre. But still fairly interesting with a historic fort as well as having an excellent beach. Maybe too small for 14 days but fine for a week.

Aruba is perfect for you. I'm also not one to go to an all-inclusive and always rent a car. We rented a Jeep in Aruba and did a desert tour on our own. We saw the Natural Pool and drove to Baby Beach. Aruba is fairly small, so it's very easy to get around on your own. Come to think of it, we barely spent any time at the hotel while there!

We like Barbados.

Every once in a while they run a promotion called 'best of barbados' which is a pretty substantial discount. In 2008, we bought tickets for 2 from PHX, through MIA to BGI, 10 nights hotel accomodation, and a rental 'mini moke jeep' for $850. A steal, anyway you look at it.

Curacao. Like being in Amsterdam with a very tropical twist.

Our favorite island is St Martin. But, if you like to hike, I can recommend St. Lucia. The rain forest is beautiful there.

It sounds like you might like Saba. It's rather remote, so less developed than most of the islands. Saba - The Official Website of the Saba Tourist Bureau

For a good balance, you could stay in St. Martin, wonderful in itself, and do a day trip to Saba for hiking. Saba Day Trip from St. Martin, St Maarten Day Trips | Viator.com

Jamaica is the best. It has the most entertainment, best food and drinks and is safe as long as you don't go to Trench Town or downtown Kingston after dark.
