I wouldn't book a hotel ahead of time. Just drive until you can't stand being in the car another minute, and start looking. You won't have any trouble finding a place on the major interstates on 7/4.

As I wrote before, the state welcome centers have lots of hotel coupons. We paid $65. for a king size room at a Hampton Inn in VA last week, using the coupon. You can also get state maps, and figure how much further you want to go, then look through the coupon books for the names of hotels in those cities.

You can probably get to NC in 10-12 hours. That would be less than halfway, so you might want to get to at least SC the first day.

Thank you for everyone's input.

Does anyone know the exact route I should take from Northern NJ? Maybe avoiding the DC traffic??
Also what would be the best time to leave if I wanted to make one over night stop in maybe SC?? To be in Fort Myers by July 5th maybe 3:00-4:00ish??
