Depends what you want in a vacation. I have been to and like both places for very different reasons. (Oahu, and Maui in HI and Puerto Plata/Sosua and Santo Domingo in the DR)

I like them both for very different reasons. In Hawaii things are generally safer, cleaner and there is much less poverty. It is also more expensive and distinctly American touristy.

In the Dominican, things are cheaper and there are all sorts of things that are just not available in Hawaii such as casinos, private beaches, and imho your money goes further.

Another thing is culture. The Dominican has a very distinctive Latin-Caribbean which influences a lot of resorts, shops and night spots. I really like it, but at the same time I can see how it may not be for everyone. My impressions of the areas of Hawaii I visited were that while there was some Hawaiian cultural stuff around it really was much more catered to tourists then the Dominican.

So I guess in short if you like a nice, comfortable paradise vacation go with Hawaii.

If you are a bit more adventurous and willing to deal with some stuff, like avoiding the drinking water, in exchange for other opportunities, like say riding a horse down a private beach, The Dominican has the advantage.

I've been to both, and single, i'd go to Dominican republic. Hawaii is beautiful, but highly doubt you'd enjoy it if you are looking for nightlife, etc as well.

Here's a thought: we're in a major recession. Why not keep your money at home?
Enjoy your trip, whatever you decide.

Hawaii is a lot safer if you want to just get away from the tourist sites and explore. If you just want a resort, either will do. If you want to experience a foreign country DR is better. It depends on your goals for the trip.

when is the trip? I dont, there is a group of people going to DR in June, and if I go to hawaii, that would be in september

from where? I'm on the east coast in Maryland
If you're going with a group in June, that would be my choice but only if the group has like interests. I'm assuming Hawaii is a solo trip.

MD to Honolulu is a very LONG flight and expensive. MD to the DR is only 6 hours (not including layovers, of course) and much less expensive. Also the time change - MD to HNL - will probably induce some jet lag.

No matter where you go, both places are beautiful. Happy travels!
