Birmingham isn't the prettiest or most interesting place in the UK, but close by you can go to Stratford upon Avon ( Shakespeare's birthplace, lots to see and do) and Warwick ( the kids will adore Warwick Castle a "must see" , lots of fun activities, jousting etc...)
Birmingham itself though it has had an urban regeneration is really not that great but there is some industrial heritage sites to visit and of course lots of shops.
About an hour by train is Oxford, England's most beautiful city and tons to see and do, museums, gorgeous gardens and fabulous architecture etc... It would be a shame if you didn't go. I live there so if you need any info let me know.
2 websites for you:
Heart of England
www.www.birminghamuk.com/touristinfo.htm (broken link)

Hope it helps !

There is plenty to do in brimingham as its a large city (2nd biggest in UK) in terms of UK cities so im sure you will find stuff to do Things to Do in Birmingham - Birmingham Attractions - TripAdvisor may help you. But as mentioned Birmingham isnt a pretty city at all but it has improved over the last few years.
