We are planning a trip to Hawaii in December to visit family over the holidays. When would be the best time for us to buy the tickets? We really need the cheapest possible. Also, has anyone ever bid on airline tickets?

Hawaii is one of those places where you never know what is going to be available, when and why. Yes sumer is the peak season but your reservations and travel plans are priced on when you are staying and traveling, not on when you buy. True there could be a better deal down the road, but just as likely they could raise prices across the board and only honor the lower price for those with reservations. Right now Hawaii is the cheapest its been because occupancy is low, but if it starts to pick up, watch the rates rise with it.

From the prices I have been viewing at the discount websites, it doesn't really seem like the cheapest flights are being sold right now. I think I will take my chances and wait.

There are no "discount websites" for flights. What you are seeing on these sites is airline published fares, probably with an added service charge included for buying from what you think is a "discount site".

You can get some package deals however (hotel and airfare) if you search carefully. Or consolidator fares with some work.

When to buy? You never know, it's like a huge gamble - at this point you are hoping that flight demand drops between now and then to an extent lower than the airlines can currently forecast. If you don't buy now you are depending on a trigger - another recession, typhon in Hawaii, Japan suprise attack, something like that. The holiday period is otherwise very much in demand, particularly as you get closer to the holiday. My thought is the soonest you can book (now) will be the cheapest.

assuming you are in texas.

fwiw...about a year ago, we were considering LA cruise to Hawaii or flying there. Looked at Hawaii flights and I recall 1st class tix were going for around $1,500 (RT) from Minneapolis. They hardly moved at all between the time I first looked 330 days out and when we left in January. They are now listed at $2,900. Recall recently seeing that MSP to LAX coach RT fares went from around $450 in January (buying in 2009) to $700 now.

Flying during the holidays to Hawaii is one of the busiest times of the year. You should have started looking at fares in January. The best fares may be associated with travelling on the holiday as most don't like to do that.

After Labor Day. I usually find the best deals about 50 days out.

Flying anywhere warm over the holidays is expensive and the closer you get to december the higher the fares will be...trust me I always go away over Christmas..last year in May I booked round trip flights from NJ to San Diego in May for December 24 travel for less than $300....I looked at my same flight in early December and it was well over $800
