Until you get into an area without GPS reception which is quite common in rural areas.
I've driven in extremely rural mountainous areas w/o an issue. Maybe you're thinking about cell phone coverage which is spotty in rural areas. For this I wish we had satellite phones like the ones used in the mountains of europe or the deserts of the middle east.

This much dependance on high tech gadgets is foolish since they are NOT that reliable like a simpler radio is.
I say if it makes you feel better go for it. Have not used one in years but long drives at night on lonely stretches of interstates, the cb chatter kept me company.....
I use both a CB and a cell phone when I take a road trip. The CB is good for listening to local info from those around you, such as traffic problems or "bear" reports. It is also good for vehicles that caravan together so you can talk to all parties at the same time. It is also useful for reporting emergencies where there is no cell phone reception.
In areas where cell phone reception is good, it is probably the best choice for reporting an emergency to the authorities, but it is useless to report traffic problems to your fellow travelers, unless you happen to know their numbers. A cell phone beats a CB when you wish to call home, too, unless you're close to home and have a CB base station there that is actively monitored.
