Billionaire railroad figure Philip Anschutz has announced a new luxury rail tour operation to start in the summer of 2011. He's calling it American Railway Explorer and is HQ'd in Denver, Colorado.

Excerpts from the Denver Post article:

- The new railroad firm is an affiliate of Greenwood Village, CO-based Xanterra Parks and Resorts, which privately held Anschutz Co. acquired in 2008. Xanterra acquired 25 1950s-vintage rail cars last year from GrandLuxe Rail Journeys, a rail operator that ceased operations in 2008 because of financial difficulties. GrandLuxe formerly had operated as American Orient Express.

- Xanterra operates lodges, restaurants and other concessions at national parks including Rocky Mountain, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, Death Valley, Crater Lake and Zion. It also runs the Grand Canyon Railway.

Prices seem quite steep at $900 to $1,500 a day per person. Would you pay that much for a 5-star experience?

The concept didn't even make it 90 days from inception. The plug got pulled on this effort.

Though I'm a fan of everything railroad, there's no way I'll pony up $1500.00 per day / per person, it's just ludicrous. No doubt others felt the same way and few reservations were probably received.
