What are some good vacation destinations in the US with populations in the range of 100-300,000? I like cities with centralized spots of interest, where you don't have to do a lot of driving outside of the city. Thanks for any info or ideas.

What region of the country do you prefer? What season of the year will you be going? Do you prefer coastal or mountain areas?

Good questions. I prefer the south, or generally warmer climates. Coastal (no mountains). Anytime of year.

Of the places I have spent some vacation time Charleston SC stands out a fun smaller city with good restaurants, beaches and some good Civil War history too. We rented a car so we could stay in N. Charlston and visit some of the plantations and Folly Island.

I agree that Charleston, SC would be a great choice for you. You would probably like Savannah, GA too.

I agree Bookmen - I loved Savannah as well. We didn't have as long there as we were on our way to The Golden Isles - St. Simon, Jekyl etc but we did have time to go out to Tybee Island right off Savannah and took a small boat excursion on the Bull River where we saw many dolphin. Tybee Island light is great to climb for the view. Very lovely and peaceful. We also walked through "Wormslow" just outside of Savannah. Beautiful walking trails and history there too.

Default Mrytle Beach,SC

Mrytle Beach,SC is always fun summer or winter. You can go on the beaches, play golf, go see shows, go out dancing. and not to far from Wilmington, NC and each side road going to Wimington leads to another small town beach.

Sarasota, FL would be another place to consider. If you get sick of the coast, I would suggest Knoxville, Chattanooga, Asheville, Charlotte, as nice places to use as 'travel-hubs' (in that order for me).

Late August is good in Rapid City, SD, Bellingham, Spokane, Olympia, Vancouver, WA, Bend, Eugene, Ashland, Klamath Falls, OR. Victoria BC. Bozeman, or Whitefish MT, Moscow, Boise, or Coeur De Lane, ID. Colorado Springs, Durango, Ft Collins, CO. Laramie, Sheridan WY (warmer climates, great (smaller) cities) but no (little) civil war history

Chico and Davis, CA are nice and near a cheap SWA flight to SMF.
