Tri Cities
I have read all these posts with great interest. I am 64 and retired. We just moved from SoCal (Riverside) after being there since 1956. We moved there for several reasons...1.Cost of housing for retired is absolutely outrageous. I sold my house in Riverside and even after splitting the costs with the EX I still had enough to buy a very nice home here in the Horn Rapids area of Richland2. Too many people in SoCal...hardly hear a word of English (that is a disappointment here) and the ever changing culture to Hispanic is hard to take3 Crime rate...hardly a safe area to go to at night and even many aresa in the day...even in Riverside tehre are places you just do not go4. Traffic...if you think traffic is bad here try driving the 91 from Riverside to Orange or LA county (about 30 miles give or take) and find it takes and hour and a half to two hours just about ANY time you do it 5.Illegals...they are taking ovevr the place 6 Liberality of the Sacramento government...Liberal to a fault...look at San Francisco
ALL my family is still tehre but we elove it here and will never return. Washington is our new home

story and hanford is the most contaminated land in the world
outside of Chernobyl. Over 1 million gallons of the most radioactive
waste ever created has leaked out of the tank farms into the
ground / ground water. How they will ever recover this leaked
waste is a mystery to me. There is a potential for the whole
Tri-cities area to become contaminated if the waste reaches
the Columbia River. If this happens, the Tri-cities will become
a ghost town and all the homes will become worthless. I would
like to know how much radioactive waste has made it into the
river already since I used to waterski and swim in that river all
the time. I would bet there is a lot of cover-up going on in order
to preserve the peace among the residents and to keep the area
functioning. Please watch the 60 minutes episode and do some
research before you move there...
Have any of you who live there now seen any recent tests for
radioactivity in the river? I am very curious..

When I mentioned tri-cities to my parents, the first thing out of their mouths was Hanford. I think they've seen the same things about Hanford, which is obviously a real issue that has not been resolved. When I first heard about it I was pretty horrified too...
Two things have changed my mind about it though.
1: Cancer rates for the aren't high compared to most populated areas of the state (although it's been a while since I've looked at the data).
2: The state notoriously tests water and I would be really surprised to find some conspiracy where the state would hold back data to avoid scaring people.
On the same note, I probably wouldn't live right on the Columbia, especially after hearing about all the skin problems people get from going into the water further down towards Portland.

Tri Cities and Hanford
Way to scare people. I lived near the San Onofre nuclear power plant in San Onofre So Cal. I also jandled their workers compensation clasms. so I know of what I speak. Yes there are spots in Hanford that are very contagious and scare me...BUT did you know this area is attracting more high te ch jobs than almost anyplace in washington and teh PNW. Also population is growing at an incredible rate. Lets see..comparing Hanf0ord and the potential is like talking about the BIG ONE in LA and or the BAY AREA. It could happen and Pam Anderson might go out on a date with me. Neitrher are very likely. There is danger everywhere...You just have to do your best and pray.
Have a great day.
Signed...very happy in Richland

Where specifically do you find the toxic release information. I have tried to search for it on this website but nothing comes up. I have heard that from someone else. We are
thinking about moving to the area and I would like to view this information. Thanks

Moving to Tri Cities
Well we are into our third month here in Horn Rapids Richland area. I have found the nay sayers generally wrong.
We have found that there is a paucity of really good restaurants. Not many moderate priced ones either although we have found several good Mexican Restaurants and one or two good Italian. Now if there was a really good steak house.
We really love Ricchland and Kennewick and have not seen much of Pasco. Who says no rain...we have had more here than we had in Riverside Ca in a year and already two sessions of snow. Just love it.
II have found excellent medical care and Kadlec Hospital in Richland is great.
The bigges thing for this area though is the people. I have never in all my 64 years seen so many great people even with my CA plates still on my car. We are not sorry and wish we had come here sooner.

Replying mostly to Ron House - for a good steak house, try TS Cattle Company in Kennewick, on Clearwater. Cedars and of course Anthony's back behind WinCo are about as far upscale as you will get here, also Katya's Bistro, on G.W. Way is good, Russian inspired fare.
Probably familiar with the row of restaurants on Lee Blvd, try Atomic Ale if you are in the mood for something different. 3 Margaritas and Chapala Express are both good and reasonably priced, Stone Soup on the Parkway has good soup & sandwiches.
In Pasco, look up Garibaldi at 707 W. Court - their lunch buffet is really good, and again upscale is Bin 51.
IMHO the best expresso drinks in town are at Barracuda's over near the Bypass on Van Giesen.
It's not California, it's not Palo Alto, it's sure not San Francisco - the clientale is just not here, there are you, me, and at least 6 other people who are willing to shell out for really good food - all the cheapskates go to Mickey D's or a smorgy - I know plenty of people who I know damn well have a net worth of half a mil or more, who won't pay $20 for a good dinner.
Hope I mentioned some place you didn't already know about.

Ron, I visited TC over the summer and am considering moving there from Texas. I would recommend taking an afternoon every once in a while to go wine tasting and ask the wine makers about any news of new restaurants. Many of them were hoping for and expecting a rush to keep up with the publicity that the wine region is getting. In fact I talked to a chef from Seattle who was also tasting wine and thinking of opening a place there. Plus you have an excuse to go drink wine!
Good luck!

Thanks Mitch. We have not hit the Cattle Company but its on our list. We like Cousins in West Pasco and Sterlings is good for breakfast. We would like to see a Sizzler or a Claim Jumper here.
We like it so much here and are sorry we did not erelocate here sooner. Everyone has been so nice even with my California plates on (since removed)
Love the snow.
Still looking for a good church.
Happy Hoidays

The only thing Tri-Cites is missing is a Whole Foods Market!!!
They should have atleast have a Trader's Joes. If the Tri-Cities had one of these market's then i would move there.
