You are what you eat...at least do exercise, or maybe you'll be another statistic...

You know...my mother and I agree that we noticed this 30 years ago when we first moved here. (the weight thing)
Although I would hesitate to call the Tri-Cities an unhealthy place, there are definitely more chubby folks here than other places I have lived. I, in fact, have struggled with an extra 20 lbs since I moved back here in 1992.- Olias

Yes, I agree. Some people are so judgemental. There have always been heavy people around and most people have the tendency to gain as they get older.

^But that is not the point of this thread. This isn't a debate over what people should or should not eat, it is a discussion of whether or not you believe the Tri-Cities, in general, is overweight compared to other areas in the state.

From my perspective, I do agree with you Moon Waffle. Lived in Hawaii (don't get me wrong we do have a lot of over weight people there too), Seattle, and Oregon, Moving here has been an eye opener for me. I do tend to see a lot of over weight people here as well. I think its due to a lack of good eats in this area! There are way too many fast food chains and not much family restaurants that serve up healthier portions of food. We've spent many hours driving around the area looking for "healthy" places to eat, rather than driving up at some fast food place...so after exhausting all our efforts, we drive up to the nearest grocery store and buy something to cook at home! Just my thoughts...don't get me wrong here, but there are a lot of outdoor activities.

Something I noticed recently...I was out biking on a Saturday and ended up in Howard Amon Park in Richland. Decided to grab some lunch and headed up the street to the little "downtown" section of Richland for a sandwich or soup at one of the little delis...NOTHING was open!
Ended up at Subway of all places. Ugh. Gross. But the whole experience just left me upset at the fact that I could not find somewhere to get a healthy meal on the weekend. And I started thinking: maybe this is part of the problem? Where are the healthy places to get a meal in the Tri-Cities? And is this contributing to the weight problem my friends seem so sure of in this area?
Obviously I have no data to back this up but it sure seems like it could be a factor...

come on. is it really rude to notice that a certain city has a larger population of overweight people compared to other parts of the state? Tri-Cities does lean to the heavy side. I've lived all over the state, I'd know. It doesn't help that the people i've met here seem negative about health stores and being pro-active.

Just to add a few facts to the discussion, with a ranking of 1 being best and 39 being worst:
Benton County is ranked 21st out of 39 counties in overweight people (BMI 25-29.9) and Franklin County ranked 34th.
Benton County is ranked 7th (tied with several others) out of 39 counties in obese people (BMI 30.0+) and Franklin County ranked 16th (also tied with several others.
Benton County is ranked 12th out of 39 counties in overweight and obese people (BMI 25+) and Franklin County ranked 29th.
That means that Benton County is "healthier" than most counties when it comes to weight while Franklin County is not. But any way you look at it, when it comes to weight, Tri-Cities is NOT the most unhealthy place in Washington.
San Juan County, by far, is the least overweight.
