I have lived in the Tri-Cities for many years and love it! I have also lived in other places around WA including Yakima. My family did not like Yakima at all. Not a very safe place. I hated watching the news there. Much bigger gang problems and shootings every day. Shopping is definately better in the Tri-Cities, there is a lot more to choose from and stores are nicer and cleaner. If you go to the city websites and look under schools they are ratedon a scale of 1-10. Richland is above national average at 7.5, Yakima schools rated very low the last time that I checked. The graduate rate from high school and college is very high in the Tri-Cities compared to Yakima. Just some things to consider...

I've always felt that the Tri-Cities news is rather boring and they supplement it with news from Yakima which seems to be 90% gang violence, shootings, stabbings, etc. And by boring I mean we do not seem to have as much of the problems as Yakima. Not that we don't have any.
TC appeals more to those who are looking for a big suburb... with no 'urb' (no big urban center). Thats TC for ya, one big suburb.
*** appeals more (as far as I can infer from these forums) to people who love outdoors stuff.
I dislike all the competition between the two areas. I was recently there, and when the guy I was talking to found out I was from east end Pasco, he suddenly got all defensive, saying things like "well, as you know, a LOT of people live here..." I just nodded my head and smiled. He thought I hated *** or something. And its here too, I meet people who really, really don't like ***.
I meant to quote this, this isn't directed towards Gamehog lol
WOW BUDDY! I'm not sure where you get your statistics but, they aren't right. The TC is not larger in than yakima by city limits nor by the towns combined together "although yes the three towns combined would be larger than the MAIN part of Yakima which is around 82,000 but none of the TC towns by them selves is even at 60,000" The TC sits with a population of all three towns and combined metro of 168,000, while the Yakima metro has 229,000. There is a major misconception with people as believing Yakima as a single population, with out knowledge of its suburbs...
And about the crime, last I heard the TC has one of the worst auto theft problems in America per capita, while Yakima's crime is just in one area in a 10 block radius, while to the west in "west valley", has some of the most wealthiest people in Washington.....
And no Yakima's economy is not going down hill, it's just the down town that 'was', but it too is even picking back up, but that is for yakima as a whole, people have to remember the yakima area is "SELAH, TERRACE HEIGHTS, EAST VALLEY, WEST VALLEY, AHTANUM, MOXEE, GLEED, UNION GAP, WILEY CITY, SUMMITVIEW, COWICHEE, TIETON, WAPATO, TOPPENISH and Much more" and each of these towns contribute to the YAKIMA economy, not just YAKIMA's.....
yeah, just some things to think about, and yakima is nothing like the TC, that though you have to find out on your own, it's to hard to explain. Just to let you know too, Yakima's retail is expected to boom again in early 2009 with a new mall on the way, and more stores expected to come to the mall they already have, which will soon surpass the TC shopping scene.
Another thing that is different about yakima, is yakima has the wine boom going on which is drawing interest to it, which will mean more hotels and business, yeah I'm going to quit rambling now...
FYI, I live in Bellevue, and talk about Yakima is really growing that's why I began to read up about it

This is exactly what I am talking about .
Be careful when you regard those metro counts, because (according to the official MSA), both *** and TC have metro counts around the 230,000 mark.
Thats ludicrous, however, for both areas. When the MSA counts metros in this area, they look at the counties.
When you combine Ben and Franklin county, yes, you do get something around 230,000, but this is counting Prosser, 20 miles outside of W. Richland. Same thing for Yakima, the MSA claims it exceeds 200, but when excluding towns like Sunnyside (which are not connected to *** by any means; except for 30 odd miles of farmland), then the true Yakima "metro" cannot exceed 90,000; this is polling together the small towns of Union Gap and Zillah, which are connected to Yakima, along with it.
That is how we reach the conclusion that TC does not have a population of 230,000, rather 170, and *** has something in 80-90 mark.
As for shopping, it really is irrelevant. The real powerhouse in the PNW is Seattle. Nevertheless, the East grows. Pasco projected population in 10 years is 70,000 (up from 50) and the area is expected to truly hit 200 in about 15 years. These petty squabbals wont solve anything, however, so lets stop chatting and get building.
Actually, Kennewick is already at 60,000. Update youre library

Entirely off-topic, but did anyone read the paper's report on the projected
stadium complex plans for the Columbia River?
Below are the 2007 statistics per the state. The 2008 stats will be out any day and I'd suspect TC MSA will have passed Yakima MSA by then. But it really doesn't matter...as the Seattle metro area continues to flush out the middle class with awful weather, an outrageous cost of living, and horrendous traffic, many will continue to flock to the sun-drenched desert hills of Eastern Washington.
Within the City Limits:
Yakima 82,940
Tri-Cities:
Kennewick 62,520
Pasco 50,210
Richland 45,070
W. Richland (gotta include it) 10,850
Total: 168,650
Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA)
Yakima MSA: 233,062
Tri-Cities MSA: 228,992

Okay after the last couple of days after seeing this thread, I looked at maps and population statistics of both areas. It is based on a couple of websites, and the most recent information I could find, but not all from the same year. So obviously it's not the most accurate. Any way here are the metro populations.
^Interesting count, although I would take out Benton City, Wallula, and "small towns near ***" (im assuming Toppenish, Grandview, etc.)
Fairly accurate.
Then again, neither TC, ***, or even Spokane have 'true' Suburbs/Metros. The only places that merit that are big cities like NY, Atlanta, and Chicago.
That is why I exclude the sorrounding towns when doing population counts
