Just wondering what people do when living on the Washington side of the border but who happen to work in Oregon? I still have an Oregon driver's license so I can easily say that I'm an Oregon resident when buying something in Washington and I'm asked for my driver's license and then sometimes sign something. Will this come back to bite me at a later date? Will keep my Oregon driver's license as long as I can if this is a common thing to do. Also, since I work in Oregon, I'm told I will have Oregon state tax taken out of my paycheck even though I'm a Washington resident. Is this true? Can I get that money back at the end of the year (or at tax time) or something?

Don't have an answer for you concerning the DL thing, but, yes, Oregon will withhold on your wages. You file as an out-of-state resident. As such you are taxed at a lower rate.
As to whether you'll get it all back or any is beyond my pay grade...it depends upon how much you make, what income bracket and how much you chose to have withheld.

If you are a Washington resident then keeping your Oregon DL and claiming to be an Oregon resident to avoid paying sales tax would be illegal. Will it come back to bite you? Hard to say. Washington has been known to go after people illegally avoiding paying state taxes. When I use to live in Kennewick I often saw the state post an 800 number for you to call to report your neighbors that were registering their cars in Oregon.

you have 30 days to get you DL once you have moved into the State. You will be illegal after that time and there will be repercussions. (the WSP checks for utility connections in your name and sales transactions / pattern of spending)

WA State Licensing: Moving? Get WA license
Once in the state, if you change addy, you get 10 days to update your DL
RCW 46.20.205: Change of address or name.

You WILL be filing an OR tax return, as well as federal, so you MIGHT get a meager refund from OR, but no more than if a resident.

It used to be worse to register a car in Washington before they changed the fees that are not based on the car's value. A lot of people used to live in Wa and say they were in Oregon to get out of the high registration fee.

The reason you are having a problem, OP, is that you are doing it all wrong. The hot setup is to live AND WORK in WA, but buy stuff in Oregon, if you live along the Columbia...

I know jobs don't grow on trees lately (well, not jobs most people want anyway) but try to find a WA job and that will fix your tax problem.

Yeah that change really hosed me. As a WA resident I had gotten rid of all my nicer rides, and learned to enjoy 'Beaters', my fees had gotten below $20 / yr, then they up and changed it to $35 (which is what I paid for most my beaters at abandoned vehicle auctions). I got so used to the low fees, taxes, insurance... that I still drive beaters (I have to protect 'my image'(cheap) with my kids ). I do try to buy vehicles with OR plates that are still good, as I can always give the plates to some of the OR homeless / poor at the auction to use on the beaters that they buy.

And Yes Neal

sorry but true. You NEVER want to work in OR and live in WA if you are a property, or business owner, or a consumer, as WA can then hammer you (Property, B&O, Sales Taxes), as well as OR beating you up for income tax. Get a WA job ASAP (or you can work for an OR employer from your WA home, then you only pay OR tax on the time you have to go into the office for meetings (good reason to not go to ANY OR meetings)
