There were many illegal abortion mills back in those days so they may be a result of an illegal abortion and no one wanted them and the satchel owner didn't know what to do with them and stored them. Surprised the smell didn't alert someone. Interesting story.

........or, the mother couldn't afford or find someone to perform an abortion and got rid of it the only way she could.....give birth and then dispose of it.

In this particular case, as someone mentioned, they could have been still births and the parent/s simply couldn't afford a proper burial.....or.....they moved around a lot and didn't want to leave them behind and couldn't afford or didn't like the idea of cremation.

The sad thing is there's always been parents who want these babies. I remember reading about the old American (I know it stopped here, but not in other countries) black market "adoptions" where babies were stolen or doctors paid for unwanted babies.

The babies probably didn't mind too much.

They were dead, after all.

They are in the newspaper for being in newspaper for 80 years.
