From NC: Nannie Kollar has been charged with felony elder abuse of her 92 yr old mother in Kernersville. Hospice workers reported her to the authorities... as when her mother died, there were reported signs that she had been abused. Kollar is released on $10,000 bail.

From SC: I can barely report this, so nauseating. An elderly woman in a hospice-type setting in Charleston was raped by a man (not employee) who somehow had gotten into the building. Her screams were heard by staff and the perpetrator was arrested. The lady died a few weeks later.
With the economy, lack of jobs, children of all ages returning home, expect to see more of this. By keeping elderly parents or grandparents at home, at least there's some treasured income coming in.
An extremely obese elderly woman, who can't walk, recently left the LTC/Rehab facility I work in to have her deadbeat son take care of her.
And why did she come to the facility in the 1st place? Negligent care by her son, leading to gaping bed sores.
Just like child abuse, elder abuse seems rampant.....It is such a sad subject but I post these because we all need to be more aware.......

I think when elders are taken care of by their children, abuse can and does happen more than you think. There's a lot of stress with caretaking and most people aren't really cut out for it. Motives can be financial, emotional (guilt, fear, etc.) or other reasons.
Also, financial exploitation. That's another form of abuse I'm sure is rampant. We had this in my husband's family w/ his 2 siblilngs.
Here in Michigan they just finally changed the law to make it punishable to exploit a vulnerable adult financially. Until then, care staff were just openly using people's bridge cards, cars, even their washing machines.
It is a terrible crime, taking such cruel advantage of someone weak and ill. Even worse is the child/parent abuse, having known of 2 in my life from neighbors growing up in Brooklyn. These parents sacrificed so much for their kids and the kids were so heartless. The worst crimes are not often the act itself, but lack of remorse, regard and basic empathy for our loved ones. As a man who lost both parents it bothers me a lot. Had my folks been around in their time of need i would do anything to help them in their time of need. Humans can be so cruel to each other..losing sight of how much better the world could be if we tried, just tried, to be civil and care about each others welfare. Greed and anger so corrupt the human soul!
Yes, this happened in our area too. The case made me sick as I knew one of the sisters and used to work with her in fact, who had been accused of neglect. You would have never guessed that their mother was at home being treated so neglectfully. Very sad.
Unfortunately elder abuse is a big problem nowadays. I mean, I don't know how it was in the past, but now that people are living well into their 90's and 100's, it's becoming very common since the elderly are now too weak to even get out of bed on their own. They are very vulnerable, like children. There are also a lot of heartless souls in the world.
