What areas do you want to visit? It's a big country and, I'm sure, there are places in every state to avoid. I do agree that most tourist areas are fine with normal precautions.
I am wanting to visit Las Vegas and the grand canyon 1st. The other places i am interested in is miami, new york and also colarado for the history
You're not planning to do all this in one trip are you??? Maybe that's just not clear to me. The United States is gigantic. Some states are bigger than some countries in the world. You may want to post your questions in each city's respective forum to get more local responses.
Of the places you've mentioned, I'm most familiar with Las Vegas. There's plenty of crime in areas near the strip, but as long as you stay on the strip, you'd be perfectly fine. There are tons of people walking around at all hours of the day and night in the main touristy areas.
As far as the Grand Canyon goes, I've heard the mules can be a bit aggressive, but I can't imagine much crime being there.
I don't quite get why so many people in other countries have this perception crime and violence is rampant in the United States. Most people in this country manage to go through their whole lives without being victims of serious crimes.

No not in one trip lol just these are the places I would like to visit in the future may not happen but ive always wanted to. I think other countries perception of america been rampant with crime due to the media, also there is alot of gang documentaries etc about america on english tv so people get the wrong impression
I wasnt actually near the riots I live in the north east of england so didnt have to witness it 1st hand but i felt sick watching the news, 100 year old businesses been burnt to the ground its disgraceful.
In Miami and Vegas, single women should not go to bars alone, and go home with random strangers. One should not do that anyway, but it seems that young women do, and end up dead. Sad.
There are random crimes every where, but having lived in both of those towns, I never experienced any crime personally. But, I tend to stay away from strip clubs and ghetto bars. If you go to normal tourist venues, you will be okay.
Visit the metropolis of Miami during the day. Personally I prefer the Keys to Miami.
The last time we were Miami we had our dog ... walking him in a park. One of Miami's finest pulled in jumped out of his police car leaving the car door open ... and headed toward us! His intent was to see our dog ... he had two Boxers at home. Then he got to his real purpose ... he looked at me and my husband and said ... "you two look like two pigeons out here." Well ... we've never been called pigeons before.
I had on my wedding rings and another ring and my watch as did my husband. I was carrying a shoulder purse ... then he starts telling us ...the park, a real nice looking place to us ... had people mugged and robbed often ... he spent 20 minutes or more with us about areas to stay away from.
I really appreciated this young officer and wrote a letter to the Miami PD Chief commending him.
