I think overall there is one overwhelming thing to remember....... Random violent crime is very rare. Just use common sense. Do go walking around cities you dont know alone at night. I mean really the things should be obvious if you plan on traveling alot.

There are random crimes every where, but having lived in both of those towns, I never experienced any crime personally. But, I tend to stay away from strip clubs and ghetto bars. If you go to normal tourist venues, you will be okay.
I would hae to say there have got to be 100's of more dangerous things than having a one night stand with someone.......if you dont watch too many tv shows that is......I mean stds or pregnancy would be much higher risk than someone assaulting you

Most places in the USA are very safe, including large cities like the Big Apple. Violent crime has been dropping year after year even in bad-reputation cities like Detroit, MI. Right now New Orleans wears the Murder Capital of the World crown, but I would also recommend it as one of the coolest places on earth to go on vacation. The stuff you see on TV, that makes every American streetcorner look like the shootout at the OK Corrall on a daily basis, is nonsense.
